DOT Physicals

If you drive a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), you are required by the Department of Transportation (DOT) to get and pass a DOT physical. Learn what a DOT physical is, what exactly it covers, and how Washington Occupational Health Associates (WOHA) can help with all of your DOT physical needs.

What Is A DOT Physical?

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), “in the interest of public safety, CMV drivers are held to higher physical, mental and emotional standards than passenger car drivers.” Therefore, the DOT physical examination is required by the FMCSA to help ensure that a person who is employed to operate a commercial motor vehicle is medically qualified to safely do so.

A DOT physical exam is valid for up to 24 months. There are instances where the medical examiner who performed one’s DOT physical may issue the certificate for less than 24 months. This typically occurs when the medical examiner wants to monitor a driver’s condition, such as high blood pressure.

If the driver passes the physical, the medical examiner will provide a copy of the results to the driver as well as complete a Medical Examiner’s Certificate that will be placed on file within the Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS).

What Does A DOT Physical Cover?

The DOT physical is a comprehensive medical examination and includes many items. Here are some of things you can expect during yours:

  • A discussion of your complete health history
  • A vision screening
  • A hearing test
  • Blood pressure and pulse measurement
  • A urine analysis
  • A complete physical exam of the body.

What To Bring To Your DOT Physical

If you have to wear glasses, make sure you bring them with you to the exam. You’ll also want to bring a list of any current medications you are taking, including your dosage information, as well as any documentation from your primary care physician regarding any health issues you may have. Having these items on hand will help the physical go as smoothly as possible.

Who Can Administer A DOT Physical?

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) a DOT physical examination must be conducted by a licensed “medical examiner listed on the FMCSA National Registry.”

An appropriate medical examiner can be any of the following:

  • DO – Doctors of Osteopathy
  • MD – Medical Doctor
  • PA – Physician Assistants
  • APN – Advanced Practice Nurses
  • DC – Doctors of Chiropractic
