What Is The Citizen Immigration Exam?

The Citizen Immigration Exam is a medical exam that checks the health and health history of any immigrant applying for either a green card or citizenship for the United States.

This exam differs from a typical annual physical because it cannot be performed by one’s regular physician. Applicants must go see a civil surgeon who has been specially designated by the relevant immigration authorities to perform the exam.

Why Is An Exam Required?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the purpose of this medical examination is to “identify applicants with inadmissible health-related conditions for the Department of State (DOS) and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).”

What You Need To Bring To Your Citizen Immigration Exam

There are several important items and documentation you will need to bring with you to your exam appointment:

  • Your current vaccination record
  • A list of any prescription medications you are taking.

Additionally, if you have ever had a positive Tuberculosis Test (PPD – Purified Protein Derivative) and received treatment, you will need to provide a letter from your doctor detailing the treatments you underwent.

Also, if you have ever tested positive for syphilis, you must provide a letter from your doctor detailing the treatment you received.

And, if you have ever been treated or hospitalized for a mental illness or substance abuse, you will need to provide records including the diagnosis and treatment details.
