Independent Medical Evaluations
An independent medical evaluation (IME) can be performed at the request of a third party to obtain unbiased medical information concerning an employee's ability to work, or degree of medical impairment, by an exceptionally competent, board-certified occupational physician. The examination is tailored to the needs of the third party, but typically includes a medical history, diagnoses, a medical treatment plan, and prognosis for future care or recovery.

- An unexplained failure to recover from a personal injury or illness
- Substantive questions regarding current medical care
- A second opinion to assist reviewing officials
- A disability claim is contested
- An employee has been absent for an unusually long time period
- Laboratory tests to confirm diagnosis
- Interpretation of ancillary medical tests to confirm diagnosis
- Personal conversations between third parties and the treating physicians
The Physician-Patient Relationship
A physician will not perform an IME for his own patient, nor will he pursue a physician-patient relationship with the subject of the IME
